Visual Perception and LOD: [lod_perception.jpg] This talk provides a background on issues of visual perception as they relate to the field of level of detail (LOD). It provides a useful categorization of LOD techniques and describes various early attempts to base the resolution of objects upon simple perceptually-inspired criteria. We then provide a brief background on human visual perception, and present the metric of contrast sensitivity as a means to assess an observer's ability to resolve detail in an image. A computational model is then presented that is based upon the contrast sensitivity metric and two different systems are subsequently described that implement this model in a real-time LOD system. This talk was part of Course #14, Advanced Issues in Level of Detail, at SIGGRAPH 2002.
